CHEK News

In October/November I was a happy intern at CHEK News.  Despite the fact that I have been all over the world, I have only been to Victoria twice and the last time was 7 years ago!  I know, it's shameful- it is so beautiful!  In fact, I have been thinking about moving there for some time. That's precisely why I jumped at the chance to intern at CHEK- it killed two birds with one stone: see how a totally unique, recently-employee-owned-TV-station operates AND get a feel for our province's capital.  Done and done.

CHEK was an excellent place to intern- I highly recommend it.  They made it a very interesting, hands-on experience. Hell, the first day I was there, I shot a story!  You can imagine how happy I was about that...!

I also wrote, researched and voiced 8 promos for The Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame that aired for a few weeks, here's one:

I went out with shooters every day.  I was there for the torch run and Prince Charles & Camilla's royal visit!  I really couldn't have picked a better time to be there.

As part of my internship, they had me produce and report my own story which aired on their popular TV show, Island 30.  Seeing as I am a video journalist, I asked if I could shoot it as well, which they happily agreed to.  I knew what my story was going to be right away.  Before leaving for Victoria, everyone said that finding work in the city was next to impossible if you didn't work for the government.  But when I got there, I found there was a thriving community of young people and I thought "they must be making a living somehow!", so I found out.  It turns out that making employment for yourself (as opposed to finding it) is a popular way to go with the young professionals...and it is in fact a bit of a trend amongst the late-twenties-to-mid-thirties generation (Y? X? Z? I can never get those right).

So here it is, my very first publicly televised Video Journalist's shoot (is a drum roll too much?):

Thanks to everyone at CHEK for an excellent internship!
